Trace Griko and Jordon Fersch scored early in the first-half and the Grande Prairie Drillers never looked back en route to their first win of the season Saturday.

The Drillers defeated the Lloydminster Vandals 37-2 at Legion Field to improve to 1-3 in their 2016 Alberta Football League season.

“Overall, it was just a very good team effort. Everyone just pulled together… everyone from offence, defence and special teams. Everyone did their part and did their job and it was a big team win,” said quarterback Ty Bessette.

“Our o-line gave me a lot of time in the pocket and I felt comfortable in the pocket. Our whole o-line just did a great job and I had a lot of time and the receivers got open and had space.”

The team has a bye-week over the Canada Day weekend and return to action July 9 with a road game against the St. Albert Stars. On July 16 (Airdrie Irish) and July 23 (Calgary Gators), the team returns to Legion Field for their final regular season home games.

Bessette admitted it has been frustrating early in the season. He said the team has been struggling to get players out to practice and its showed in games with miscommunication and lack of team chemistry.

He said if the team wants to continue the momentum they gained from Saturday’s win, the team needs commitment from everyone.

“We definitely have to come out hard and get everyone out to practice on Tuesday and Thursday this week and hopefully we keep gelling and everything continues to work for us,” said Bessette.
